What are the Waves Beyond the Shore?

“The Search for reason ends at the known; on the immense expanse beyond it only the sense of the ineffable can glide. It alone knows the route to that which is remote from experience and understanding. Neither of them is amphibious: reason cannot go beyond the shore, and the sense of the ineffable is out of place where we measure, where we weigh. We do not leave the shore of the known in search of adventure or suspense or because of the failure of reason to answer our questions. We sail because our mind is like a fantastic seashell, and when applying our ear to its lips we hear a perpetual murmur from the waves beyond the shore. Citizens of two realms, we all must sustain a dual allegiance: we sense the ineffable in one realm, we name and exploit reality in another. Between the two we set up a system of references, but we can never fill the gap. They are as far and as close to each other as time and calendar, as violin and melody, as life and what lies beyond the last breath.” Abraham Joshua Heschel, “Man is Not Alone: A Philosophy of Religion

Your ears will hear a word behind you, "This is the way, walk in it..."
(Isaiah 30:21) NAS

Ahar (behind you, in the background) is the Hebrew word used in Isaiah 30:21a. Combined with shama (hear/listen/obey) and davar (a word) this phrase is very telling.

You may have heard the phrase, Devarim Torah -- the words of Torah. Torah means teachings or instruction. The WHOLE of the Word, the Tanakh  and Brit Chadashah, are His Words; and when you hear them, study them, understand them, obey them -- He is speaking to you.

Ezekiel and John both spoke of that voice behind you -- in the background:

Then the spirit took me up, and I heard behind me a voice of a great rushing, [saying], Blessed [be] the glory of the LORD from his place. (Ezekiel 3:12) KJV

I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet... (Revelation 1:10 ) NAS

That voice in the background, the Word of God, gives shalom shalom -- wholeness, peace, quiet, rest, contentment, healing...

Between the Shore and the Waves is a place that I will be sharing some studies, all of which are a work in progress. My hearts cry every day is, "Abba open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in Your Word." Take me to that place that Abraham Heschel calls the waves beyond the shore.
